Earthquake details

An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 hit Central Italy, in the region of Lazio, Rieti, 110 km north-east of Roma, 43 km north of l'Aquila on Wednesday 24 August 2016 at 01:36 UTC (03:36 local time).

At the time of this report, Italian authorities reports more than 290 victims and hundreds injured. Major damage was reported in the town of Amatrice, in the province of Rieti where dozens of buildings collapsed trapping people in their sleep.

More than 200 aftershocks have been recorded in 24 hours following the main shock, and more than 370 aftershocks in 5 days.

The main shock lies more or less between the epicenter of the April 6th, 2009 l'Aquila earthquake and of September 26th, 1997 Umbria and Marche earthquake. More information on the main shock is available here.
